OTHM provides a track of professional qualifications that are designed for Student Members to develop progressively the skills and knowledge that they will need to help them in their careers.

OTHM qualifications enable students to develop the skills that are essential to their progress within the industry:
  • Understanding of the operations, structure and culture of the industry
  • Understanding of contemporary issues in the industry
  • Information technology skills
  • Customer relations skills
OTHM offers qualifications at four levels:
OTHM has a key relationship with London South Bank University allowing holders of the OTHM Higher Diploma to have direct entry to the final year of London South Bank University's Batchelor's degree programme BA (Hons) in Tourism and Hospitality.

Students who have successfully completed the OTHM Higher Diploma and who have two year's management experience in the tourism and hospitality industry are eligible to apply for entry to London South Bank University's MSc programme.

You might be contemplating a career in food and beverage, hotels, tour operations, airlines or in any other part of the industry. OTHM qualifications will help to make you a professional in your chosen field.

Entry Requirements

The OTHM Introductory Certificate is an Open Access qualification. This means that you do not require any formal qualifications to take this course. All that we require is that you work in the Tourism and Hospitality industry. You may be just starting out in your first job or you may already have experience and be looking for a first professional qualification to advance your career. You must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the course.

What will I learn?

Topics that will be covered include:
  • The global tourism and hospitality supply chain
  • The structure of the hospitality industry
  • Principles of customer service in tourism and hospitality
  • Ecological, cultural and other factors and their effects on the industry
  • Ways of promoting culture through tourism and hospitality
  • Compare countries involved in sustainable cultural and ecological tourism
  • Job opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industry - their entry requirements and progression routes
How will I be assessed?

The OTHM Introductory Certificate is assessed in two ways. Firstly, you will have to write a project with the guidance of your tutors. Then you will take a multiple choice on-line examination.

Satisfactory completion of the Introductory Certificate allows you to progress to the OTHM Certificate which is the next stage in the OTHM qualifications track.
Professional Certificate
Duration: 4 Months

You might be contemplating a career in food and beverage, hotels, tour operations, airlines or in any other part of the industry. OTHM qualifications will help to make you a professional in your chosen field

  • OTHM Introductory Certificate OR
  • 5 GCSE's at C+ or 5 O'Levels OR
  • Mature students with at least 5 year’s relevant experience OR
  • Equivalent academic qualifications
+ Evidence of English Language Competency if your first language isn’t English – please consult your training centre

Who is this suitable for?

The OTHM Certificate is suitable for people who work in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry and have OTHM Introductory Certificate or other formal qualifications, or substantial experience in the industry. You may be just starting out in your first job or you may already have experience and be looking for a professional qualification to advance your career. This qualification will help team leaders and supervisors and those who want to rise to the first tier of management.

  • Mature students with a minimum of 8 year's experience including 3 year's management experience
+ Evidence of English Language Competency if your first language isn’t English – please consult your training centre

The OTHM Diploma is suitable for people who have passed the OTHM Certificate (or equivalent) or who are already working at supervisory or junior management level. The knowledge that you will acquire in the six modules of this course should immediately enhance your career prospects.

The OTHM Higher Diploma is suitable for people who work in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry and have an OTHM Diploma, or other qualifications at a suitable level. This qualification is suitable for middle and senior managers. On completion you can also be put forward for election as a Full Member of OTHM.

OTHM Student Registration


Students need register with OTHM only once. Should a student wish to go on to take a further OTHM qualification no further registration fee will be charged. However, Student Member's are required to renew their membership each year while they are studying.

Examination Fees

Each module is assessed by a written examination or a project. An examination fee is payable for each module assessed. A surcharge is payable on all examination fees for candidates outside the UK. This fee covers the extra costs involved in providing assessment outside the UK.
